Messina - No, wait - it's Santorini

Our scheduled stop in Messina was cancelled due to bad weather and we sailed for Santorini instead, which pleased a lot of people. After a wet start the weather was not too bad either.

Had a quick trip up to the high point of the island before going to the archaeological site of Akrotiri, which was a flourishing city around 2,000 BC before being destroyed by the eruption that formed the present island of Santorini in around 1,600 BC.

The excavation site has been beautifully protected with an impressive roofed structure, with the site only re-opening in 2012.

The extent of the site and the sophistication of the buildings and streets is interesting to see, with indoor plumbing and drainage and 2-3 storey structures.
