Makassar, Sulawesi, Indonesia

We decided to do our own thing in Makassar but soon realised that the distances were very deceptive - ended up getting a car and driver to take us around, which was a good decision. Even though it was a quiet time of day the streets were still choked with traffic. There had been very heavy rains in February and the streets were still flooded.

Stopped at the local wharf area first where many boats known as phinisi where moored, ranging from small fishing boats to very large cargo carriers. They have a very distinctive design used by the Bugis peoples of the region, who are great seafarers.

Went on to visit Fort Rotterdam, built by the Dutch in the late 1600s on the site of a native fort. Very interesting museum in the grounds highlighting local culture and peoples. Did a bit of shopping before heading back to the ship very tired.
