Kotor and surrounds, Montenegro

Our first port of call was Kotor, Montenegro which was a new country for us. Beautiful mountains as we arrived in the bay of Kotor, reached by sailing through some very narrow channels.

Our excursion took us up into the mountains behind Kotor, driving along a road with 25 switch-back curves - very nerve-wracking. The views back to the bay and the sight of the ship from the viewpoint on the road was impressive.

After we crested the top of the climb from Kotor we stopped at the small town of Njegusi to sample some local meat and wine. The processing of ham is very similar to Italian prosciutto, but tastes better.

Our next stop was in the old royal capital of Cetinje to visit the palace of the former King of Montenegro. He was known as the father-in-law of Europe, having married off 5 of his daughters to other royal families. The small chapel is where he and the Queen are buried.

On the way back to Kotor we drove past the town of Budva, which is on the Adriatic Riviera and home to the rich and famous - apparently.

Once back in Kotor we walked around the old town area, visiting St Tryphon cathedral which was built in 1166. Still has remnants of the old frescoes that would have decorated the whole inside of the cathedral.

Lots of very narrow streets full of interesting little shops and restaurants - as well as lots of tourist shops.

The whole town is surrounded by a defensive wall, but with nearly 1,300 steps we passed on doing the climb. When we left after dark the lights along the walls made a very pretty picture.
