Yesterday we visited Messina in Sicily - which the locals were keen to point out is not Italy. That was across the strait!
Despite the forecast weather we had a spectacular day, with views across the strait to Italy and of Mt Etna as we approached it.
The volcano is the largest in Europe and has impacted on the area around it - by devastating areas during eruptions but by also making it the most fertile land in Sicily.
On the drive to Mt Etna we passed by Taormina, which is a popular tourist destination. The countryside is dotted with many old and interesting houses - some occupied but many derelict.
Our final stop was the Alcantara Gorge, which is an ancient watercourse through lava that has the same type of characteristics as the lava shafts in some Australia sites in Tasmania and NSW.
It sounds so Interesting xx
