Very different looking people and costumes from Bintulu. The area is also home to some of the tribes that practised head hunting - in some areas up until the 1950s.
Our tour was to a heritage village and museum, followed by a visit to a zoo near the city. It was an excellent tour and we saw so much of interest, especially at the heritage village.
There were some examples of Bornean longhouses, including some actual skulls. Look closely in the pictures below.
Our guide was very knowledgeable and gave us some insights into how the tribes lived and fought, including the reasons for the practice of head hunting.
We went on to visit a zoo just outside the city and got to see some exciting animals, some for the first time.
Hornbills, pygmy elephants - although still quite large animals - Sumatran tiger, Orang-utans, proboscis monkeys and cattle called Ankole with long horns.
As we sailed away we saw a water village across the harbour which is home for many people. The large building is the Sabah State Admin Centre - 33 stories high and the tallest building in Borneo.
